More than 60 ExxonMobil PNG Limited (EMPNG) staff volunteers, partnered with Laba Holdings Limited and Total Waste Management and students and teachers from eleven schools in PNG LNG project areas and Port Moresby, to commemorate World Environment Day on 3 June.
Participating schools included Boera primary school near the LNG Plant, Aiyo primary school in Moro, Kapute elementary school in Hides and eight schools in Port Moresby. The event was commemorated with awareness programs relating to the 2016 World Environment Day theme, “Fight Illegal Wildlife Trade”.
Awareness was raised through colouring competitions, essays, poem, and poster competitions and acting out of dramas relating to the theme. Awards to the prize winners were made by EMPNG representatives on the day.
ExxonMobil PNG Limited’s Security Safety Health and Environment Manager, Dennis Vidmar, was impressed with students’ knowledge about wildlife conservation.
“It is encouraging to see children understanding how important it is to protect PNG’s biodiversity and wildlife, and what they can do to help. Minimising our impact on the environment and its inhabitants is something EMPNG takes seriously and it is great to see this value being shared by the future generations of this country.”
