Redscar High School in Porebada and Lealea Primary School in Lealea in the Hiri West outside of Port Moresby each received a new and fully furnished staff house courtesy of ExxonMobil PNG, operator of the PNG LNG Project.
Lealea Primary School’s Grade 7 teacher, Mrs Wapu Tinaik James, said she is so excited to be moving into her new house.
“I have been teaching at Lealea Primary School in the Hiri West for seven years now, and I am so honoured and privileged to be blessed by this housing. For the past three years, I’ve had a long commute to school. My deepest thanks to ExxonMobil PNG for its commitment to improving education in our communities,” Mrs James said.
When handing over the house keys to Mrs James, Alyssa Warner PNG LNG Plant Manager, said one of the most important ways to build the capacity of the nation is through education.
“Since the beginning of the PNG LNG Project, we have championed education programs within the Project area of the Hela, Southern Highlands, Gulf, Western, and Central Provinces, through school board governance program, scholarship and school infrastructure.
“When teachers and students have access to a safe and comfortable place to teach and learn, the likelihood of improved educational outcomes is significantly increased,” Ms Warner said.
ExxonMobil PNG has supported Redscar High School and Lealea Primary Schools since 2014 with the building and renovation of staff houses and classrooms, as well as the construction of new ablution blocks.
The ceremony at Hiri West was witnessed by representatives from the school board, the Hiri Special Purpose Authority, Central Province Education Department, and Gas Resource PNG LNG Plant Limited, the local landowner company.
Earlier this month, ExxonMobil PNG and Gas Resource PNG LNG Plant Limited also completed construction of the Boera Primary School fence.
